Key differences between DCImanager Essential and DCImanager Progressive:

  • "Racks" can be used in the server and equipment management modules
  • Advanced tools for managing servers types and OS templates
  • VLAN management
  • Search and automatically register new servers

Before you start, backup the databases and the /usr/local/mgr5 directories. Then you need to delete DCImanager Essential using standard methods of the package manager, and install DCImanager Progressive.

To upgrade from DCImanager Essential to DCImanager Progressive you first need to go to the Racks management and register all your racks. We recommend using numerical values, however it is not required.

Specify values for your racks. Go to the Equipment sections ->Switch management, select a switch, click the "Edit" icon to specify the corresponding rack. Selecting the "Apply to servers" check box to specify that rack for all the servers assigned to the selected device.

Follow the steps above to specify the rack Power distribution units (Equipment-> PDU).

You can also specify racks for servers in the Server management module. If you selected the "Apply to servers" check box, you won't have to do it manually.

Server types

DCImanager Progressive delivers additional functions for server types management. Go to (Settings->Server types) to provide more detailed information about hardware part of servers of a certain type. DCImanager will automatically verify that server configuration and performance correspond to data specified in its type. This will enable to find problems with server hardware.

You can also specify OS templates that will be available to servers of a certain type. If you already used server types in DCImanager Essential, you first need to add OS for server types. There are two ways to do that:

Adding a list manually

Go to (Settings-> Server types->Operating systems) and click "Add" or "Delete" icons to add/delete a list of OS for each server type.

Auto testing OS templates

Clicking the "Test OS" icon DCImanager will select an available server of the corresponding type and install all OS templates. All the successfully installed templates will be automatically added into the list of OS for that server type (Settings->Server types->Operating systems). Once completed, the server will be automatically cleared.

Warning. If the server type is specified for the server, the owner of that server (with the "User" user role) will be able to use only those templates that are specified in that type (Settings->Server types->Operating systems).

VLAN management

DCImanager Progressive enables to manage VLAN that exist on switch ports. This will facilitate datacenter safety management and perform other operations. More articles related to VLAN management coming soon.

Server search

The new version of DCImanager enables to automatically search and add new servers. For more information please refer to the articles DCImanager:Princiles of operation: Server search and Configuring server search.
