VDS hosting (Virtual Dedicated Server) – hosting type when provider give an access to a virtual dedicated server to a client.

VDS emulates a physical dedicated server, but there can be much more independent VDSs on one dedicated server.

The purpose

This service can provide:

  • Dedicated server analog, but for affordable price
  • Full control over VDS - VDS owner has root access and can make custom configurations according to his needs, user even can install the necessary software or change OS
  • Minimum limitations – the maximum amount of websites, databases, domain zones, ssh / FTP / email users can be limited only by VDS' resources according to the tariff.
  • Independence – VDSs which are located on one dedicated server, are isolated and do not steal resources from each other, VDSs also use separate IP addresses, when shared hosting provides only one IP address for all users.

This service may satisfy needs of such customers for whom shared hosting is not enough, but a dedicated server is too much.

VDS perfectly suits for highly loaded network services, and for software development and testing. Closed corporate projects with high-security requirements and classified information are located generally on virtual dedicated servers because some small companies can not afford to purchase a dedicated server.

Hardware requirements

To organize VDS hosting you will need:

  • One dedicated server which supports hardware virtualization - its resources are shared between VDSs. You can also sell these resources creating different tariff plans
  • small number of IP addresses - IP addresses are assigned on each VDS, that's why the amount of created VDSs depends on IP addresses amount which you can assign

You may extend your resources if you lack your server resources. You can buy one more server and connect it to the system, and you won't need to set it one more time.

How can you make money

VDS hosting is described using such limitations as:

  • size of disk space
  • amount of CPU cores
  • size of RAM
  • amount of traffic per month
  • amount of IP addresses

qualitative differences:

  • virtualization type
  • control panel
  • additional services which may include
    • DNS hosting
    • space for backup data
    • VDS administration
